Controlling and Avoiding the Damages of Humidity

By Shawn Hart If you are one of the thousands of people who live in an area with high humidity, you understand the problems that must be faced when you go outside. When its hot, the humidity makes it so you can never cool off, and when its cold, the humidity only accentuates the bitterness of the cold weather. The humidity can make it very uncomfortable to be outside, but there are many more problems to be dealt with when your home has a high level of relative humidity (RH). High humidity in the home encourages the growth of mold, house-mites, and other allergens. Humidity can damage valuable keepsakes and furniture, as well as the structure of your home. In extreme cases high RH can affect your health as it can aggravate asthma, arthritis, and rheumatism. With all the problems humidity can create, it is important to know how to recognize the signs of high humidity, clean and repair any damaged areas, and prevent any further damage by controlling the humidity levels in your home. Humidity is created from many sources inside and outside your home. Obviously, living in a humid area of the country will have a huge effect on the level of RH in your home, but other every day activities can also affect RH. Some of these activities, including taking a bath or shower, boiling water on the stove, using the dryer or dishwasher, and even breathing can raise level of RH throughout the house. In many cases, the damages humidity causes can go unnoticed for a long time until it is too late. You can recognize and prevent any potential damage from humidity by looking for the following signs. Condensation, mildew, mold, musty smells are pretty obvious signs. You must also look for distorted window frames, bubbling or pealing wallpaper, structural defects, damaged furniture, rusty pipes, and ruined clothing as signs of high RH. Also, pay attention to your and your familys health as it can be a sign of high levels of humidity. If your home is already showing signs of mold growth or damage from high humidity levels, you will need to assess whether the cleaning and repair job is something you can handle yourself or if you should hire a professional cleaner to do the job. As a general rule, if the affected area is less than 10 square feet, you would be able to handle the clean up yourself. In more extreme cases, it is best to consult a professional. When doing it yourself, its important to start at the source of the problem. Repair any leaking plumbing and dry everything thoroughly. Also scrub mold off of all surfaces with a detergent and water. Be sure to wear rubber gloves, an N-95 respirator, and goggles without ventilation holes to avoid contact with mold spores that can irritate your skin, lungs, and eyes. Certain porous materials such as carpet or ceiling tiles might have to be replaced altogether if affected by mold. Also, it is usually best to hire a professional if you suspect mold is growing behind wallpaper, because you could possibly spread mold spores by trying to clean it yourself. Once you have cleaned and fixed any damage caused by humidity, or if you have noticed the warning signs of high humidity, it is time to take preventative action against humidity in the future. The first thing you will want to consider getting is a humidistat which will monitor the amount of relative humidity in your home. A level of humidity between 30% to 50% humidity is optimum for most homes. Your best defense against high humidity levels is to purchase a quality dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will be able to regulate the amount of humidity in your home as well as filter out dust and other pollutants from the air. A dehumidifier can also save money on heating bills because your home can stay warmer with the lower levels of humidity. Dehumidifiers are relatively inexpensive and use very little electricity to run. It is also important to maintain all plumbing to make sure there are no leaks which will foster the growth of mold. When taking a bath or shower, turn on a ventilation fan or open a window to allow excess humidity to leave the room. Keeping your home free of high levels of humidity will save you a lot of problems in the future and will allow you to better preserve your furniture, clothes, and valuable keepsakes. Just make sure you look for the warning signs of high humidity, clean and repair any problem areas, and take measures to prevent further problems with high RH. Doing these things will make your home a cleaner, more comfortable place for your family and friends. Shawn Hart is an internet marketer for Air Conditioner Home. Your Wedding Budget: Setting It And Sticking To It

By Ron King Want to make sure your marriage doesn’t end up on the rocks before you get to the chapel? Then set a realistic wedding budget — and stick to it. In the process of planning a wedding, budget concerns often is a source of disagreement for a couple. They may have different ideas about what kind of wedding they want, and about what they can afford. To make the wedding a truly happy occasion, it is important that the couple discusses financial constraints early. Set A Budget And Save For It The first tip is — discuss finances before the wedding plans begin. Everyone involved in the decision-making process needs to understand exactly how much money is available for the wedding. To maximize that budget, you should start saving early for your wedding. Advance planning and saving will allow you to maintain or even exceed your budget, comfortably. And that will make wedding planning easier and more fun. Get Everyone On-Board Once your wedding budget has been established, set it aside for a few days and then review it again. This gives everyone a chance to let the information sink in. The budget review after this waiting period gives the participants a chance to verify that they understand and agree to the budget. This is vitally important, because someone who does not agree with the budget may overspend in 1 area, leaving the rest of the budget in jeopardy. Budget Line Items When you’ve decided exactly how much money is available for your wedding, the next step is to divide the total into budget categories, such as the venue, food and drink, bride’s attire, groom’s attire, transportation, entertainment, photography, favors, centerpieces, and gifts. It is also advisable to set aside money for unforeseen expenses. Who Pays Part of establishing a budget is to be clear on who will pay for what. Shopping And Negotiating You will need to negotiate contracts for services, and so you must know the budget for each area of the wedding. If you have allotted $250 for entertainment, look for a DJ whose rate is approximately that amount, then negotiate to ensure that you remain under budget. It’s wise to shop around and compare prices for services. A company may come highly recommended, but if they are outside your price range, let them know why you are going to have to choose another company. You may be surprised at how willing they will be to give you a better offer. Substitute Creativity For Cash Doing things on your own is another way to stay under budget. Homemade invitations or making your own favors or centerpieces can greatly reduce the wedding cost, freeing up funds for other areas of the wedding. Do not fall into the trap of viewing your budget as restrictive. Instead of thinking about what you can’t afford, focus on how you can make your wedding and reception truly unique. You will be inspired to create a wonderful, memorable wedding regardless of your budget constraints. Anticipate The Unforeseen Realize that there are bound to be snags along the way. If you go over budget in 1 area, you will need to cut the budget in another area. As long as you stay aware of your spending and realize the ramifications of all your actions, you can roll with the punches and alter your plans to accommodate any needed changes. Make It A Wonderful Memory A wedding budget can cause emotional strain on a couple and their relationship. It is important for them to discuss their finances and establish a clear budget for their wedding plans. Doing this early in the wedding planning process can help the couple to avoid conflict during the planning phase of the wedding. It can also make the wedding more fun for everyone, and start out the marriage on a positive note. After all, working together is what a marriage is all about. Visit Wedding Ideas to learn more. DNA Paternity Testing Services How to Choose the Right One for You

By Peter Vine If you do a search on Google for DNA Paternity testing services you will find almost 2 million matches. Companies offering DNA testing services are emerging everywhere, and you need to be very careful who you trust your Paternity testing requirement to. In brief there are generally 3 types of service providers: 1.Companies that specialise in DNA paternity testing and have their own laboratory facilities to carry out the work. 2.Companies that are brokers for other service providers, and simply broker a partnership between the end user and the service provider. 3.Laboratories that simply carry out DNA testing as a side-line as opposed to a core activity. It goes without question that you should only commission your work to organisations that fall into category 1 above. Any other alternative increases the risk that you may not get a reliable result, with the enormity of consequences this is likely to bring. Once youve decided on a company to carry out your work, there are some further questions you need to ask before you commence any analysis, these include: Has the companies scientific testing facilities been accredited by an external organisation such as the American association of blood banks? Has the company a strong track record in carrying out an interpreting DNA testing results? Furthermore has the company ever presented evidence of a DNA result in a court of law? If youre going to commission your testing online, does the company have a physical address that can be verified as opposed to a Po Box (which normally signifies youre dealing with a broker)? How will the results be presented for each of the two different scenarios of match and non-match? Will all laboratory testing be carried out in duplicate to reduce any process based errors? The outcome of the answers to these questions should provide you with reassurance that the company doing your work is a reliable organisation. You may wish to continue your research and confirm the right answers to the questions above, by visiting the Paternity testing specialist website, highlighted in the author section below. Peter Vine is a successful online publisher of Home-DNA-Test-Expert.com He provides practical advice and the latest information on all aspects of DNA Paternity Testing Services, which you can readily research on his website. Gifts for Scrooges: Fun + Function

By Cathy Goodwin Q. “I’m just getting my business going, after being last off last year. So the lasthing I want is a silly twenty-dollar jokegift. A year ago, it would have been great. Now all I can think is, ‘I could use a couple of twenty-dollar-bills right now.’” Signed: New Scrooge A. Many of us have friends who are cutting back rather than racing forward. Some may be stressed out by cash flow crunches of a new business. Others have experienced personal losses. If they’re feeling scroogier than ever, we can understand. You don’t have to limit your gifts to socks and underwear (although a good friend may welcome woolly socks from Eddie Bauer or a treat from Victoria’s Secret). So, by request, here are tips on combining fun and function for the holiday season. DON’T send a free e-card! Many of those sites collect email addresses for their own nefarious uses. DO send gift certificates: for a restaurant — even a pizza delivery service for amazon.com, magellan.com and other online boutiques for an office supply house — Staples, Kinkos, OfficeMax Tip: A friend is moving? Send her a gift certificate for a store or restaurant in her new city. Send a season ticket for theatre, ballet, symphony or basketball — get him out of the house! (from my book, Making the Big Move) DO send gifts for pets. Catnip, pet beds, and gift certificates for grooming all work well. I have one dog bed in each room and Keesha never, ever tries to sit on the furniture. DO send coffee for caffeine fiends, wine for connoisseurs and Florida fruit baskets for the healthy-minded. My Seattle friends sent fresh-roasted beans one year. Mmm! DO respect boundaries. Some people want to be alone on holidays, especially if they’re single, newly moved or mourning a loss. Keep it low-key: “If you don’t want to come for dinner, come by for coffee afterward– if you feel like it. Don’t bring a present. Do bring the dog.” And I’ll share a secret. Just about every single person I know welcomes a take-home serving of holiday dinner. We always pretend it’s for the cat. See my article on “being single on holidays.” And what if you’re the one who’s cutting back? Maybe this is a tough year and you’re not feeling much holiday spirit. Maybe you lost a friend or family member, temporarily or permanently. Or you’re getting over the flu. There are no easy bromides. Some people create their own rituals. Some find comfort in the old rituals they know so well. Do as much as you can, comfortably. Whenever I say, “I just don’t feel like it this year,” I usually wish I had — one year later. One tip: Write down your experiences, feelings and wishes. Hide your writing for at least six months. A year from now the world will look very, very different. How To Get Rid Of Gophers Humanely

By Michael Aral Small as they are, gophers can be a serious nuisance. The good news, though, is that you can get rid of them for good humanely. Despite what all the rodent poisons on the market imply, killing gophers isnt a long-term solution. There will always be more to replace the ones you killed. To get rid of gophers for any length of time, youll need to make your property either impossible for gophers to get into or so unappealing that they stay away voluntarily. Doing this is easier than it may sound. Get them out and keep them out If gophers are only a problem in your flower and vegetable beds, try building raised beds. These not only make gardening easier, but when protected from beneath, they can also keep burrowing animals out. When you build the bed, make it gopher-proof by first laying down a sheet of hardware cloth to cover the bottom of the bed area. Another trick is to install rhizome barriers around your planting beds. These underground barriers are usually used to contain rapidly spreading plants, but they also keep out gophers. Gophers that are eating up your lawn, on the other hand, can be caught unharmed with live traps designed for small rodents and moved to a wilderness area. Unless youre experienced at live trapping rodents, though, its best to leave this one to the professionals. Environmentally friendly pest control companies like Animal Problems? Inc., of Florida are licensed to safely remove a variety of animals, including gophers. To keep gophers from returning once you get rid of them, consider building a barrier around your property. Because gophers can’t climb, a solid one-foot-high fence buried six to 12 inches into the ground around the perimeter of your property is enough to stop gophers from getting in. Offend their sensibilities The smells from your yard and garden are what attract gophers and you can get rid of the gophers again by altering those smells. Products like Mole-otov Cocktail made by Not Tonight Deer! or Whole Control Spray by Nixalite use non-toxic ingredients to make gophers favorite foods unappetizing so the rodents no longer have a reason to hang around your garden. To use these products, just attach the container to a garden hose, turn the water on and spray the repellent over the gopher-populated area. Mole-Med by Gardens Alive, another rodent repellent, can be spread on the lawn either wet or dry. Shake things up Gophers have a very keen sense of hearing and sensitivity to ground vibration, so theyll avoid areas where there are constant sounds and movements in the ground. Installing devices that create these annoyances is a cheap and easy way how to get rid of gophers. Sonic rodent repelling units for the garden are self-contained spikes that can be inserted into the ground to create noises so irritating to the gophers that they stay away. These sounds are so subtle, though, that not even dogs are bothered by them. One of the most popular devices is the Sonic Molechaser from Molechasers International. The smaller model can keep an area of approximately 11,250 sq. ft. (1045 sq. meters) gopher-free and the larger one covers up to 13,500 sq. ft. (approx. 1250 sq. meters). Theres also a solar-powered model. This model saves batteries, but due to the solar panel, its a little more visible than the electronic types and it only covers up to 7,500 sq. feet (approx. 700 sq. meters). Another sound gophers avoid is that of their predators, owls and hawks. Electronic birdcall imitators like the Bird Sound Device available from U-Spray, Inc. can scare off gophers for 10,000 sq. ft. (930 sq. meters) around. The Bird Sound Device is triggered by a motion detector, so to use it to get rid of gophers, place it beside a light at night when the gophers are active. How to get rid of gophers the all-natural way Faking the sound of predatory birds can work well, but the real thing is even better. Barn owls are one of the gophers main predators, so if this bird is native to your area, put up a barn owl box on your property to attract a natural gopher prevention system. The only drawback is that barn owls look for new homes only in the spring, so you may not be able to attract one immediately. If youre looking for an environmentally friendly way to get rid of gophers that are snacking on your lawn and garden, youve got several affordable and easy-to-use options. While not everyone can get a barn owl to drop by, plant barriers and smell- or sound-based gopher repellents can work just as well. Weight Loss Without Exercise

By Rien Vidad We all have had a hard time with weight loss. It is something that most of us will struggle through, but with a little help and determination we can beat the battle of the bulge. I have been where you have been, gone through the ups and downs only to come out more knowledgable. I hope in this article I can show you that it is not all about running on the treadmill or jogging for miles. You can take simple steps to help control or reduce your weight. 1.) Start eating Breakfast. I know that this sounds like common sense, but you know the saying…”Common Sense is sometimes not so common.” For the life of me I could never figure out why I was eating so much, so late at night. I would eat dinner and then find myself stuffing myself with more food as the night went on. I remember being in college and raiding the vending machine at midnight for cookies and chips. Feeding my face with anything and everything I could get my hands on. At the same time I was not eating my first meal until about noon. I never put the two together. When you think about it logically, you are fasting for 12 hours. That was the reason for my late night binges. From midnight until noon I would not eat anything. Think about that for a bit. Have you ever skipped lunch and dinner? I am sure you have. Remember how hungry you were? I am sure you do. Now think about doing that everyday, not eating for 12 hours on a regular basis. Once I started eating breakfast I stopped having those late night binges. I sometimes would eat late at night, but not nearly the amount I used to. 2.) Stop eating out so often. I can guarantee that you will see a difference not only in your weight, but also in your pocketbook. How many of you actually know the nutritional content in a cup of coffee? How about in a greasy fried hashbrown? How much fat is in that breakfast sandwich? Most of us don’t know and I venture to guess that we don’t want to know either. A lot of food that we consume when we are out are sauted in butter, fried in oil or baked with tons of sugar. While it does taste good, it keeps us coming back and keeps the weight coming as well. When we prepare our own meals we can monitor what goes into it. Instead of frying something in oil we can try an alternative such as non-fat cooking spray or instead of tons of salt we can try another seasoning. By preparing our meals we can give our body what it needs and less of what it wants. If you work all day, taking a little extra time the night before to pack your meals can pay off greatly. Not only on your health, but your finances as well. Lets add this up, lets say that you have fast food for breakfast and lunch 3 days a week. I am guessing $3.50 for breakfast and $6.00 for lunch, now that’s being conservative, we all now that that it could be a lot higher. That’s 3 times $3.50 and 3 times 6.00 = $28.50. Now let’s look at this grocery bill, lets say we get some fruit such as bananas and breakfast bars that would be about $5.00, a loaf of bread and a package of turkey breast sandwich meat and some carrot sticks for lunch would run about $9.00. Those groceries alone would last you a week for breakfast and lunch, would be a lot healthier and would be half of what you were spending eating out not to mention half the calories and fat as well. Now do the math for your own situation. We live in a great country, everything becomes convenient for us, even gaining weight. We can have food delivered to us, we can go to a restaurant and order without leaving our cars, but if you take a little extra effort and time you can be well on the way to a healthier and lighter you. 3.) Make a better choice when you do eat out. I know what it is like when we are busy, sometimes we don’t have the kind of time we would like to prepare something. I know the feeling. So what I propose you do is to make the better choice. With the fast food industry getting sued left and right for “helping” others gain weight as well many other afflictions that come with obesity, a lot of places are offering healthy alternatives. I love places like these. Instead of a burger you can get a grilled chicken sandwich, instead of fries you can get low fat or baked chips, instead of a soda you can get juice or water, instead of a side high in fat we can get choose steamed vegetables. Taking a common sense approach, we can make the better, healthier choice when we eat out. 4.) Start eating more frequently, don’t wait to get hungry. What? You want me to eat more meals? I thought this article was about losing weight. Yes it is. If you are like the typical person, I bet you probably eat 2-3 large meals a day. And I do mean LARGE. A lot of people I talk to hit the drive throughs pretty early on the way to work. It is so easy, convenient and cheap. You can get some coffee, a breakfast sandwich and a side for just a few dollars. All of this adds up in excess fat, sugar and calories. Of which we all know where those go. I am asking that you start eating 5-6 smaller meals. As I mentioned earlier, preferably these would be meals that you prepared yourself. The body’s natural reaction when it does not get something constantly is to go into “Storage” mode. If we are eating 2 large meals a day, it will try its best not to metabolize it as quickly, on the flipside if we are eating smaller meals our body goes into “burn”mode. Our metabolism speeds up and so does our ability to lose weight. You will also find that you will not be getting those bad hunger pangs like you used to. When you are hungry you tend to overeat. Try going to the grocery store when you are hungry and see all the goofy things you end up leaving with. Eating smaller meals every few hours offsets our bodies’ tendency to overindulge when we do sit down to eat. 5.) Drink more water. Whenever I go to a restaurant I always have water instead of a soda or alcohol. It is good for me and keeps me hydrated, it also has other added benefits. When we don’t drink water regularly our bodies naturally store it. Often we carry the water weight around our bodies. When we drink water more regularly, our bodies shed that excess water weight because it knows that there will be a constant supply of it. 6.) Cut back on alcohol consumption. This one is pretty obvious. Alcohol such as beer has a lot of empty calories. It is also a diuretic which causes us to have to urinate more often. Not only can this be annoying, but it can cause us to become dehydrated. If you have ever been dehydrated before you know the fun that comes with it: Nausea, Cramps, Diarrhea. This alone would cause me to cut back. Cutting back on alcohol also will have a great affect on your health, pocketbook and waistline. I hope that this article helped. Good Luck! How to Overcome a Bad First Impression

By Susan Fee Have any of these situations happened to you? Forgetting your clients name, unintentionally insulting a co-worker, spilling coffee on your boss, not recognizing an old friend, drinking too much at the company party, sending a racy e-mail to the wrong person, or asking a womans due date when shes not pregnant ouch! You never have a second chance to make a first impression, so what happens when that first impression is a negative one? In a perfect world none of these things would occur, but the truth is, we all make mistakes. Effective communicators are not only aware of how their actions impact others; they also know how to respond in uncomfortable situations. If handled properly, flubs can actually serve to strengthen your image and help you gain respect. If youve committed a social faux pas here is how you can recover. Apologize Immediately. Time is of the essence when it comes to image damage control. As soon as you realize that you may have offended someone, address it. The more time that passes, the more the story can become blown out of proportion. While first impressions stick, so do last impressions. Take control of the situation by making your last impression a positive, sincere apology. Avoid Over-Apologizing. Saying youre sorry is important, but overdoing it can create another uncomfortable situation. First, your goal in apologizing is to acknowledge your mistake and re-position yourself as being responsible and sensitive. If you repeatedly bring up the past, groveling and begging for forgiveness, youre defeating your purpose. Second, it puts the other person in the uncomfortable position of having to constantly reassure you. Eventually that person may choose to avoid you altogether. Make No Assumptions. Its easy to assume that others think the worst of you, but usually what we imagine is far worse than reality. Approach your apology by owning your feelings rather than telling others how you assume they feel. This gives you a chance to test their perceptions and get a real handle on the situation. So, instead of starting out with, You must think Im a total idiot speak for yourself, Im uncomfortable with how I behaved yesterday because I realized I might have offended you. Did you feel the same way? Starting out this way also prevents over-apologizing because the other person may think it was no big deal. Be Sincere. No matter what the circumstances, a sincere apology requires three steps. First, own what happened fully without blaming it on other people or circumstances. Second, acknowledge how your actions affected the other person which means listening without defending yourself. Third, commit to what you will do differently in the future to avoid making the same mistake. Such an apology might sound like, I want to apologize for what I said yesterday. After speaking with you, I can hear how much my comments offended you and caused embarrassment. I want you to know that in the future I will be more sensitive. Humor Works. Depending on the situation, a little self-deprecating humor can save you. Make sure its directed only at you and does not increase anybody elses level of discomfort. Sometimes calling it like you see it in the moment breaks the tension and provides an opening for you to recover. Be careful not to over indulge though. Too much self-deprecation can have the same effect as over-apologizing. Monitor Future Behavior. Communication has a cumulative effect, so every impression you make builds on the previous one. Overcoming a bad impression requires that all future behavior be consistent with how you want to be perceived. It will take time and trust to change perceptions, but it can be done! Diets – Why Do We Do Them?

By Marius Bezuidenhout Well, why is it that we are always trying to make ourselves look better? We feel better when we are on diets, our skin improves, and our hair shines a little bit more and you feel 10 times better even when we havent lost any weight yet. Admit it, you just feel better because you know that you are trying and have the though of maybe one day I can be fat free too!! Diets have to be the most boring and painful thing in the world but there are thousands of people who start them every day, and there are also thousands who fall of the wagon and tuck into a 800g bar of chocolate, then the very next day rejoin the thousands who are starting again! We all know that diet foods are good for you but why dont they taste as good as a juicy steak with chips, onion rings and lashings of gravy? If dieting and healthy eating were easy there would not overweight people in the world, every one would be skinny. But the chips arent going anywhere so you just have to get used to the taste of health foods and keep on trying to eat healthy. To be on a diet doesnt mean that you cant have some treats, why not go on a diet from Monday to Saturday, and then treat your self on a Sunday? I dont mean eat enough chips and chocolate until your stomach hurts and you feel physically sick, but just have a little bar of chocolate and maybe have that steak and chips. Doing this doesnt ruin your diet, it will make you feel better and it gives you short term goals, then making the long term goal of healthy eating a lot more easy to handle. Also, diets go hand in hand with exercise, again, not necessarily running 5 ks each morning before work but going for a 20 minute brisk walk every day, leaving out your treat day go on, its only 20 minutes and you will be surprised at just how many calories you burn in a week. Once your fitness levels improve try to jog for 10 minutes then walk for 10, eventually you will be able to jog for 20 minutes, walking briskly does improve fitness and it doesnt matter how overweight you are. You will feel a difference after one week. So go on start another diet, but dont be so strict on yourself that you are destined to failure in 2 weeks. Take it slowly and remember to have one day a week away from healthy eating and exercise too much of something only makes you bored, so vary the healthy food you eat to keep your diet new and exciting. Good Luck. Get healthy and get your diet tips and healthy food plan started today!
